“Women and men both should know their boundaries so that both can feel safe at the workplace”- Heera Kumari, Deputy Municipal Commissioner.
On 29th and 30th November 2019 MFF conducted a workshop on Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 with employees of Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation. The session was done in two parts, one was for the employees of the organization which involved a total of 50 participants, while the other was with IC members on their roles and responsibilities in making a workplace safe and conducive for all. The major exigencies that were needed to be directed in the session were comprehensive knowledge about SHW Law, sexual harassment and its types, the procedure of filing a complaint to the IC and LC, process for investigating a case and leading a healthy workplace environment.
The session built an understanding of different forms of sexual harassment, how it is the impact on the survivor that matters and not the intent with which the actions are implied, how traditional normal phrases and denotations can be the reason of person’s discomfort. In the end, the session moved on to the procedure of filing a Sexual Harassment complaint to the IC and LC, while the IC members were oriented about their roles and responsibilities under the redressal mechanism of the POSH Act, 2013.
The session turned out to be yielding as it gave an opportunity to the employees to question themselves, build an understanding about how they should behave in their workplace, respect each individual’s boundaries and not see everybody through the restricted lens.
MFF also trained 15 individuals from both the formal and informal sectors where they had their orientation on the law, Internal and External Committee, roles and responsibilities of IC-LC members and District Magistrate. As LC was recently formed in Muzaffarpur, therefore the session turned out to be a great opportunity to learn about it and spread awareness about the same in their community.
