Innovating Practical Approaches towards Deepening Diversity

Date: 04/10/2018  To 05/10/2018

Venue: India International Center, New Delhi

Martha Farrell Foundation recently facilitated second in series of participatory Training of Trainers (ToT) on ‘Deepening Diversity, Women Rights and Democracy in India with an emphasis on Gender Justice and Inclusion’. The ToT was conducted in collaboration with Control Arms Foundation of India (CAFI), Multiple Action Research Group (MARG), Youth Ki Awaz, Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network and National Coalition on Race and Gender Issues.
This two-day ToT was conducted with 30 participants from different part of the country, which consisted of peace and gender activists, development practitioners, advocates, academicians, political leaders and students. The purpose of the training was to support the participants in identifying key issues related to diversity, gender and inclusion in within their institutions and develop practical and innovative strategies to address these issues.
The training focused on:

Facilitating a context-based understanding of diversity, gender, inclusion and related concepts

Ascertaining key issues, gaps or challenges in deepening diversity, realizing gender equality and enabling inclusion (issues ranged from mob lynching to Muslim hate to local patriarchal resistance towards women leaders)

Methods or strategies to institutionalize diversity, gender equality and inclusion in different areas of work.

While the participants developed a larger strategy for working on these issues in their sectors, the training also supported them in understanding their own individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs or political beliefs. The ToT facilitated an exploration of these differences in a safe and positive manner to enable an understanding of tolerance and embrace the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.
